Carbon Neutral Flooring
“We are in a climate crisis and the construction industry is responsible for 49% of carbon emissions in the UK. Therefore, we must take rapid action to decarbonise.”
LETI Embodied Carbon Primer
Around 85% of UK commercial flooring is made from oil. This includes PVC tiles and sheet, safety floors, woven vinyl and synthetic rubber. Oil-based raw materials and high-energy manufacturing processes result in inherently high carbon footprints and help to perpetuate the oil extraction and processing industry. These materials are single-use and non-biodegradable.

Carbon Offsets
Some manufacturers within the flooring industry purchase carbon credits to offset their operational and product emissions and, thereby, to promote their company and products as carbon neutral. This is a controversial strategy and is considered by many to be greenwashing.
We do not support the use of carbon offsets. Product carbon footprints and other environmental impacts should be transparent so that construction materials can be properly benchmarked.
Openness of information leads to better product choices.
